The Atlanta Hawks announced that their MLK City Edition uniforms will return for the 2026-27 NBA season, a move that thrilled fans who have hoped to see the design again. The team revealed the news in a short video this week, explaining, “You asked, we listened.” These uniforms honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the city that shaped his life and work.

This announcement came as part of the Hawks’ coverage of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day game, where Atlanta also hosts the Milwaukee Bucks. The MLK uniforms have become an annual highlight for fans and players alike, emphasizing community pride and respect for Dr. King’s impact.

A Jersey With Deep Meaning

The Hawks first wore their MLK Nike City Edition jerseys during the 2020-21 season to honor Dr. King’s life and message of equality and unity. The design features symbolic elements tied to Dr. King and Atlanta’s cultural history. The team also used the matching MLK City Edition court, further expanding the tribute beyond the jersey itself.

In past seasons, players and coaches spoke about the emotional weight of wearing the MLK uniform. Hawks forward John Collins said that the design gave the team extra motivation and connected them even more deeply to Atlanta’s community. Though this past season saw the Hawks play in their Peachtree City Edition jerseys instead, fans have long wanted the MLK look back in rotation.

City Edition Jerseys: More Than a Look

NBA City Edition uniforms celebrate the cultures and stories of each franchise’s home. Nike and the league created these alternate jerseys to reflect local identity and history, giving teams creative freedom to connect with fans and communities.

For Atlanta, that identity touches on multiple rich themes. The Peachtree City Edition design this season paid tribute to the iconic streets and the heart of the city. Bringing back the MLK design shows the franchise is listening to fan passion for meaning-driven apparel.

Fans React and Look Ahead

Reaction on social media has been largely positive. Many Hawks supporters noted that the MLK jerseys are more than just a uniform. They see them as a statement of respect for Dr. King’s ideals and Atlanta’s heritage.

The 2026-27 season will now give Hawks players and fans another chance to wear and celebrate a look that blends basketball with a powerful message.
