Tim MacMahon unclear how Dallas Mavericks star who was signed to play with Luka Doncic fits in

The Dallas Mavericks will build around Cooper Flagg as their cornerstone for next season.

The number one pick in the 2025 NBA Draft becomes the franchise’s new face, even with superstar-caliber players like Anthony Davis on the roster.

The Mavericks roster represents one of the NBA’s most intriguing combinations next season.

They feature Flagg as a young cornerstone alongside veteran stars including Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson, some of whom were originally acquired to play with former franchise face Luka Doncic.

MacMahon predicts difficult roster integration for players like Klay Thompson with conflicting timeline priorities

ESPN analyst Tim MacMahon believes the Mavericks will struggle to accommodate this unique roster construction.

The challenge involves balancing experienced veterans with a future star like Cooper Flagg.

“It’s going to be an interesting season. I think it’s going to be a very kind of up and down season. And then it’s also a difficult team to evaluate because it’s a team that is very much in a win now window, but they just drafted an 18 year old generational talent with number one overall pick,” MacMahon explained.

The analyst specifically highlighted potential issues with role adjustments. Players like Thompson were brought in with specific expectations that may not align with Flagg-centered offensive schemes.

“Even like Klay Thompson was brought in to provide spacing and play off of Luka to get a bunch of wide open shots. They’ve got a lot of pieces that I don’t necessarily know how well they all fit together,” he continued.

Klay Thompson’s declining production raises questions about veteran role acceptance

MacMahon’s concerns focus particularly on Thompson’s ability to accept a potentially reduced role.

The veteran guard struggled last season, averaging just 14 points, 2.0 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game.

“A guy with his resume and his pride, if you are asking him to come off the bench, I’m not sure that’s going to be awesome,” MacMahon added.

Thompson’s declining numbers reflect broader questions about aging veterans adapting to new systems.

Next season could see similar production drops if the Flagg-centered setup doesn’t match veteran players’ optimal roles.

The Mavericks face the challenge of maximizing both immediate championship potential and long-term development, a balance that could be really tricky.
