Jadier Herrera stopped Ricardo Nunez in the eighth round on January 10 to win the vacant World Boxing Council interim lightweight title on Saturday night at the Rudolf Weber-Arena in Oberhausen, Germany.
The bout served as the co-feature on the Agit Kabayel vs. Damian Knyba card and paired Herrera, a 23 year old unbeaten southpaw, with a veteran opponent known for pressure and power. Nunez came forward early and made the opening rounds uncomfortable. Some ringside reports credited him with a knockdown in the second, adding tension to a fight that was more competitive than expected.
As the rounds wore on, Herrera began to take control. His speed and shot selection slowed Nunez’s advances and shifted the pace. By the middle rounds, the momentum had turned clearly in Herrera’s favor.
The end came in the eighth. Herrera hurt Nunez with a sustained burst of punches, forcing the referee to step in. During the intervention, Herrera fired one more right hand that sent Nunez down and briefly added to the confusion before the stoppage was confirmed.
The finish drew discussion, but the result was decisive. Herrera remains unbeaten and leaves with interim title status at lightweight. With the division in motion and the full belt potentially changing hands, his position is now difficult to ignore.
This was not a perfect performance, but it was a necessary one.
