Carrington Vs. Heita: Top Rank’s Final ESPN Boxing Event, Hometown Pressure, And Performance Expectations

Bruce Carrington is anxious to “perform” for his fans tonight in his 12-round chief support fight against Mateus Heita at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City. Carrington (15-0, 9 KOs) and Heita (14-0, 9 KOs) are fighting for the WBC interim featherweight title.

Top Rank’s ESPN Farewell

Carrington, 28, was chosen by Top Rank to be part of the company’s final fight with ESPN tonight. They’ve been with the broadcast giant for eight years since 2017.

“The pressure is on. I’m basking in it because my goal now is not just to win. It’s to perform,” said Bruce Carrington to Fight Hub TV, about the pressure he has on him tonight, fighting in his hometown in New York City against Mateus Heita. “I have to continue to perform and make a point where I deserve to be, where I am.”

If Carrington wanted to impress his fans, he should have leaned on Top Rank to find him a better opponent, like Sulaiman Segawa or Otabek Kholmatov. Bruce needs to run it back with Segawa to clear up the controversy surrounding the results of their fight last year.

“I have to give my people something to talk about after they leave the arena. I want to give them the feeling that they’re not just going to a boxing match. They’re going to an event,” said Carrington about his fighting in front of his hometown crowd tonight at the MSG Theater.

Soft Opponent Strategy

Top Rank picked the lower-ranked Heita to give Carrington a better shot at winning. They obviously saw how vulnerable Bruce looked in his fight against Sulaiman Segawa last August. They don’t want to put Carrington in with any additional risky fights until he gets his title shot.

In Bruce’s last two fights since the Segawa near-disaster, he has been matched against the scrubs, Enrique Vivas and Dana Coolwell. Tonight’s fight with Heita is Carrington’s third straight easy mark. The fans are well aware that this is another showcase fight for Carrington, which is why there is so little interest in this fight. It’s been completely ignored by people. If Carrington had any sense of insight, he should have figured out why fans are overlooking his fight and focusing more on the main event.

Carrington’s Championship Quest

“I could say [Rafael] Espinoza [would be the toughest at 126], but there are certain things he does that would make the fight easy for me. I could say Nick Ball, but there are certain things that he does that would make the fight easy for me,” said Carrington.

Bruce is deceiving himself if he believes WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza would be an “easy fight” for him. Carrington’s promoters at Top Rank aren’t even thinking of targeting Espinoza for him to win a belt. They want WBA champion Nick Ball or WBC champ, Stephen Fulton. Bruce would at least have a chance of beating them, but very little hope of defeating Espinoza.
