Christian Mbilli believes his fight with Lester Martinez delivered more entertainment than the rest of the September card, including the main event between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez.
Mbilli fought Martinez to a majority draw in a 10-round war earlier in the night and said the reaction he received afterward convinced him that fans viewed his fight as the standout performance on the card.
“After my fight, all the fight was very boring. Many people texted me after the fight, ‘like after your fight, all the fight was very boring,” said Mbilli to Ring Magazine about his undercard fight against Lester Martinez being more entertaining than the Canelo-Crawford fight last September. “Many, many people have called me, like the best fight was your fight, and after it was very boring.
“I’m happy because the big show was my fight.”
Mbilli said during an interview with The Ring while reflecting on the response to his fight against Martinez. The unbeaten super middleweight contender said he was proud of the action-packed fight, even though he originally wanted the victory.
“I’m very happy. I’m very proud to this fight. Of course, in the beginning, I want the victory, but I’m very happy to be in this fight. This fight was spectacular,” said Mbilli about his fighting Canelo next.
“I promise many people that it will be the fight of the night.”
Mbilli also said Martinez gave him exactly the type of difficult fight he expected going in.
“Martinez is a very good fighter. He’s powerful. He have a good chin. He was exactly the fight I was waiting for,” said Mbilli.
