Timothy Bradley Learned the Truth About Terence Crawford in 2011 Sparring

Timothy Bradley says he learned everything he needed to know about Terence Crawford the very first time they sparred — long before most boxing fans even knew who Crawford was.

Bradley recalled the experience while reflecting on Crawford’s mentality and ability to handle pressure in any situation, describing a young fighter who arrived completely alone and immediately started picking apart a world champion.

“Let’s go back to 2011 when I first sparred him,” Bradley explained on ESPN.

“Understand this. He got off the plane, brother-in-law picked him up, drove to the gym. Not go set up in his hotel, rest up, no. Drove him to the gym, got out, had his bag still in the car, put his hooks wraps on.

“Nobody with him. Think about that, no one with him.

“Gets in the ring, says hello, in a corner by himself, by himself. I had my whole team around me.”

At the time, Bradley was already a two-time world champion while Crawford was still years away from becoming one of boxing’s pound-for-pound stars.

“And I’m a two-time world champion, think about that,” Bradley continued.

“No one giving him any instructions. He come in there, pick me to pieces.”

Bradley explained that what happened the following day convinced him Crawford possessed a mentality very few fighters have.

“So then what? Okay, the next day, all right, we spar again. Completely different fighter. Again, no one in the corner,” Bradley added.

“This guy can handle anything mentally, he can handle any situation out there.”

The story offers a revealing look into Crawford long before the championships, pound-for-pound rankings, and superstar reputation arrived.

According to Bradley, the traits that define Crawford now were already obvious back then.

Everything Bradley described about Crawford back then still sounds familiar now.

Crawford walked into a champion’s gym alone and carried himself like he already belonged there.

Crawford mentality

The story shows Crawford has always been his own man and had complete confidence in his ability to back himself up.

Even as a young fighter coming through, to walk into a champion’s gym in an unfamiliar environment and put it on Timothy Bradley says plenty about Crawford’s mentality.

Very few fighters would walk into that situation believing they belonged there.

Years later, with Crawford now regarded as one of the greatest fighters of his generation, Bradley’s story feels less surprising and more like an early warning sign of what boxing was eventually going to witness.
