Michael Zerafa believes his long-discussed fight with Chris Eubank Jr. is finally falling into place after receiving what he described as strong backing from both promoters and government officials in Australia.
Zerafa told World Boxing News the situation is now looking “super solid” as talks continue accelerating toward what could become one of the biggest stadium boxing events staged Down Under in recent years.
“Looking super solid, both government and promoter are in. And Eubank even spoke out and commented about it,” Zerafa exclusively told WBN.
The latest update represents another major step forward after WBN previously revealed the fight was ‘so close’ to being finalized as both sides pushed toward an agreement.
Zerafa vs Eubank Jr.
The proposed showdown has gathered serious momentum in recent weeks, with Eubank’s manager Elliot Amoakoh already confirming genuine interest in bringing the Brighton fighter to Australia for a major stadium event.
Now, the involvement of much-needed government backing suggests the scale of the fight could become even bigger than initially expected.
The timing also makes plenty of sense for Eubank Jr.
The former middleweight contender is currently taking care of newborn twin boys while leaving his management team to line up the next challenge as he prepares to move back up in weight.
Heading to Australia would also allow Eubank to step away from the relentless UK spotlight that followed his two-fight rivalry with Conor Benn.
While the move would place him further away from his sons unless they travel with him, it would also give Eubank a fresh environment away from the endless scrutiny surrounding his career in Britain.
Wide-open division
From a boxing standpoint, the fight also carries major importance at 168 pounds.
The super middleweight division suddenly looks far more open with Christian Mbilli, Jaime Munguia, Osleys Iglesias and Hamzah Sheeraz all recently crowned champions at super middleweight.
Victory for either Zerafa or Eubank Jr. would instantly catapult the winner straight into world title contention.
Eubank has already been linked to future opportunities involving Canelo Alvarez if the Mexican superstar regains a championship later this year, and Sheeraz for a UK blockbuster, while Zerafa knows beating a name like Eubank would completely transform his own standing internationally.
No bad blood
Despite the growing attention surrounding the fight, Zerafa insisted there is no personal animosity toward Eubank outside the ring.
“Outside the ring I wish him all the success, but inside the ring come fight night I’m the reason his coach starts stressing.”
