An update confirms Christian Eriksen is โ€˜consciousโ€™ after collapsing on the pitch during the Denmark v Ukraine game on Sunday.

The 34 year old, who currently plays for Wolfsburg, went down on the 79th minute at Odense Stadion, making his 151st international appearance as Denmark were 2-1 up, with the match being abandonment after medical staff rushed to tend to him.

After the referee blew the whistle to call the game off, players from both Denmark and Ukraine came together in a moment of collective solidarity with Christian Eriksen.

The Danish Football Association said in a statement on social media: โ€œChristian Eriksen is conscious and feeling well according to the circumstances. The match has been called off.โ€

He previously suffered a cardiac arrest at the 2020 Euros, when Denmark played against Finland in 2021.

Eriksen was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), allowing his to continue playing.

Morten Boesen, the national team doctor, said: โ€œChristian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.

โ€œHe was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.

โ€œHe will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.

โ€œWe are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.

โ€œBut Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.โ€

In 2022, speaking exclusively to Sky Sports News, Eriksen spoke on nearing a return from a cardiac arrest, saying his family were fully onboard, and that there are no limits to what he can do with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD).

He said: โ€œI agree that this is an example of modern science,โ€ he said from the dressing room at Brentfordโ€™s Community stadium. โ€œIโ€™d heard of an ICD before, but Iโ€™ve never known as much about it as I do now.

โ€œIn positive terms, now a lot people in the world know that if you have something and you get an ICD, it doesnโ€™t stop your world from living. It depends on the diagnosis but, with this, you are more safe with this than anyone else.

โ€œI spoke to Daley Blind (who plays for Ajax with an ICD). Iโ€™ve seen him a few times in Amsterdam since, and even in the first week in hospital I texted him from hospital asking โ€˜what can I do with this?โ€™ He is the more famous example that it can be doable. But, for the common world, itโ€™s more new. In hospital you hear that an ICD is more normal and it doesnโ€™t stop you doing anything.

โ€œIt was pretty early in the hospital I was told that, with an ICD there are no limits. You just have to let it heal for a few months, and after you can do whatever youโ€™re capable of. It was pretty quick that I wanted to go back but I didnโ€™t want to do anything pushy.

โ€œSo I went to see some doctors and made a program for three or four months, which I have been following until the end of December โ€“ a lot of testing and training. Luckily itโ€™s been going well. Itโ€™s been a long process but my mind started early to see if I can play again, and luckily I can.

โ€œI didnโ€™t have any doubts I could come back, because it was really a slow, controlled process. The tough part is you have to push yourself, because Iโ€™m not pushing anyone. No one is pushing me. Itโ€™s me pushing myself. Mentally that was the biggest challenge. Mentally Iโ€™m ready.โ€

โ€œOn life first and most (it has changed me),โ€ he added. โ€œIt has been just another proof that the family is more important now than it was before. You do look at it differently, and look at your kids differently.

โ€œBut in football terms, not that much. The enjoyment was there before. Even now, seven months not playing, the enjoyment is quickly coming back. I will be appreciating my life, that Iโ€™m here. Iโ€™ve done that for the last seven months.

โ€œMy family have been very supportive. They have, of course, been through a hard time from when it happened. Luckily Iโ€™m still here, foremost. They have been in the process all the way. They have seen the small steps that have been made, and all the tests that have been done.

โ€œThey have really been following it and also I think thatโ€™s made them more safe and trustworthy, seeing how much work Iโ€™ve put in, how much I trust the doctors in what they have done. Then itโ€™s only to trust them as they trust me, and trust the doctors.โ€
