Manchester City are interested in signing FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa to replace Ederson next season, as Pep Guardiola looks to make further changes to his squad after an underwhelming season.

Following an extremely poor first half of the 2024/25 season, the Cityzens splashed over €200 million to sign four players during the winter transfer window—Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez. Yet, performances have not drastically improved, with Pep Guardiola’s side losing to Arsenal and Liverpool in recent times.

After signing two young centre-backs in Khusanov and Reis, Guardiola wants to replace Ederson as Manchester City’s No.1. The Spanish tactician reportedly has set his sights on acquiring Diogo Costa, who is understood to be on the radar of several European clubs. Man City have made initial contacts with Porto over a potential summer move for the shot-stopper.

One of the best goalkeepers across the continent in recent years, Costa, 25, has been Porto’s undisputed No.1 over the last few seasons. The Portugal international has done enough in Porto colours to grab the attention of elite European clubs. Man City now want the highly-rated glovesman to replace their legendary Ederson at the end of the season.

Ederson’s time at Man City seemingly up

Ederson has been an excellent servant for Man City since joining from SL Benfica back in 2017. He has racked up 359 appearances at the Etihad Stadium, winning six Premier Leagues, one Champions League, two FA Cups and four League Cups thus far.

The 31-year-old was extremely close to securing a summer switch to Saudi Pro League. However, no deal materialised in the end as Man City refused to budge on their asking price. Ederson had already agreed personal terms with Al-Ittihad but the clubs remained apart when it came to a fee.

This led to the Brazilian shot-stopper staying put at the Mancunian club. Things have not been great for Ederson and City this season, though. City’s No.1 has looked far from his best and made errors, costing Guardiola’s side lots of points. As a result, the Sky Blues are planning to move Ederson on in the summer and replace him with Costa.

Diogo Costa would be a brilliant long-term replacement for Ederson

City’s next focus is addressing the goalkeeping situation. The club chiefs want Ederson gone at the end of the season and replaced by Diogo Costa.

A modern-day sweeper-keeper with great composure on the ball and passing ability, Costa would be a fantastic long-term investment for the Sky Blues. At 25, he is far from hitting his peak, and if City can get him, they will be able to enjoy the best years of his career.

Having come through the youth ranks at Porto before becoming a regular goalkeeper for the senior side since the 2021/22 season, the Portugal international looks all set to make the step up later this year. And a move to City could just be perfect for Costa.
