Napoli confirm Allegri appointment on three-year contract

Napoli have officially confirmed the long-awaited appointment of Massimiliano Allegri as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

The Partenopei have been on the lookout for a new boss since Antonio Conte departed at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Having led Napoli to the Scudetto in 2024-25, Conte oversaw a second-placed finish last term, though their 76 points were the fewest ever collected by one of his teams in a Serie A season.

Allegri was immediately considered the favourite to take the reins, after he was dismissed by AC Milan following their failure to secure Champions League qualification.

The Rossoneri finished fifth in Serie A, just a single point behind fourth-placed Como, causing Allegri’s second stint at San Siro to be cut short after just one year.

Milan’s 70 points were the most they have ever earned in a Serie A season while finishing outside the top four (accounting for three points for a win all-time), but that was not enough to save Allegri.

According to Opta’s expected points model, Milan should have finished fourth in Serie A, though they still overperformed their xPTs total by +7.3 (70 points, 62.7 xPTS). Only Inter, Roma and Napoli registered a greater overperformance throughout the division.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis had already confirmed Allegri was Napoli’s top target, saying the club were “seeking consistency” with their next coaching appointment.

And his arrival at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona was finally confirmed on Friday, as he penned a contract to run until June 2029.

Allegri has won 14 trophies throughout his managerial career, two with Milan and 12 with Juventus – where he has also had two separate stints.

After leading Milan to the Scudetto in 2010-11, he oversaw a run of five consecutive league titles with Juve, while he also won five Coppa Italia crowns with the Bianconeri, one of which came in his second stint in 2023-24.

Napoli will open their 2026-27 campaign with a trip to Genoa, before going into a tough double-header against Cesc Fabregas’ Como and champions Inter.
