Tottenham close in on Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson

Tottenham are closing in on a January move for Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The 31-year-old has been a pivotal part of many of the Merseysiders’ successes in recent years but has lost his place this season to Milos Kerkez.

And with his contract expiring in the summer, the Scotland international said recently he was considering his options.

Spurs are in dire need of players with a winning mentality after a difficult couple of seasons under Ange Postecoglou and now Thomas Frank and a move for Robertson would seem a sensible option for both parties.

Robertson needs minutes with World Cup looming

With the World Cup looming large this summer Robertson is in need of games to keep match sharp and he is guaranteed that at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Destiny Udogie is first-choice but has suffered from a succession of injuries, forcing Frank to move right-back Djed Spence to the other side or utilise veteran Ben Davies. The North London club did, however sign 19-year-old Souza from Santos, who can play left-back, yesterday.

Asked earlier this month if he’d like to remain at Anfield, Robertson told the BBC: “Yes, but it’s a difficult question.

“I’ve got five months left and we need to see what the option is to stay or if there’s options to go and things like that. I need to sit down with my family and decide.

“After a stressful summer, I’m just trying to enjoy being a part of it and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and thankfully we’ve managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family wants going forward.”

Robertson has proved one of Liverpool’s best-value signings

Robertson joined the Reds from Hull for £8million in 2017 and has gone on to enjoy a trophy-laden spell at Anfield, winning the Premier League twice as well as the FA Cup once and the Champions League in 2019.

He added: “I think Jurgen Klopp left me out for one game and I was raging. So I’m a player who wants to play. I’ve played through injuries. I’ve played when I’m not 100% fit. I’ve played when I’ve only been 50/40/30% fit for this club and my country. I always want to be on the grass and playing and obviously now that’s not happening, so that’s what is different.

“I have a different role here this season which I’m getting enjoyment out of, but at the end of the day, footballers want to play and if anyone is sat happy on the bench, then they don’t belong at any football club.

“If you’re happy to sit on the bench, then I don’t think you have the right attitude. I think I’ve played well in the games I’ve played this season. Maybe I’ve not played as much as I would have liked, but it’s nothing I’ve been surprised by. Let’s see what happens.”
