The Algarve International Circuit is situated in the popular tourist region of southern Portugal, called the Algarve. The largest seaside towns within easy driving distance of the circuit are Portimão and Lagos, both of which are expected to be served by free shuttle bus services to the circuit on race weekend. However, high demand and low supply of accommodation for race weekend may mean that you may need to stay further afield – Albufeira and Faro are also worth considering. Given the sunny and warm weather in this part of Europe, camping is also expected to be popular on race weekend. The Algarve International Circuit sits inland, around 20km north of Portimão. During major racing weekends, traffic can become intense, and accommodation prices rise quickly. Fans who attended previous editions of the race in 2020 and 2021 experienced long queues due to limited road access to the circuit.
Dates have not yet been announced for the 2027 Formula 1 calendar, though it’s possible that Portugal could be staged on the same weekend as the Barcelona Grand Prix, which it replaces. This would see the race held from June 11-13.
Stay Near Algarve International Circuit
The best place to stay within close proximity to the circuit is the Algarve Race Resort, a five-star hotel and apartments complex that’s only 5 minutes’ drive away. Unfortunately, both the hotel resort and apartments are likely to be booked out on race weekend by teams and circuit officials, or prohibitively expensive.
The area around Algarve International Circuit is also a popular golf destination, and several nearby golf resorts offer accommodation. These include Penina Hotel & Golf Resort (11km from the circuit) and NAU Morgado Golf & Country Club (12km from the circuit). Also nearby is the 5-star Monchique Resort & Spa (20km from the circuit).
Campsites Near Algarve International Circuit
It’s not yet known if an official campsite will be offered next to Algarve International Circuit. It’s worth noting that official trackside camping is not offered for the annual MotoGP race at the circuit, and it’s prohibited to camp in any of the carparks.
Private operator Easy Camping does offer a campsite near the circuit for MotoGP, just 10 minutes’ walk from the circuit gates, and there’s a good chance that this same campsite will also be available for next year’s F1 race weekend.
For those planning to travel with a motorhome or caravan, the well-rated Vale dos Guenos Motorhome Park is located just 10km to the east of the circuit. To the northeast, around 20km from the circuit, Camping Vale da Carrasqueira is a well-rated campsite with picturesque mountain views.
The largest permanent campsites are located on the nearby coast, around 20km from the circuit. Featuring camping, motorhome pitches and cabins, Camping Alvor in Portimão has an on-site swimming pool and restaurant, and is a short walk from the popular Alvor Beach (Praia de Alvor).
Offering similar facilities, Orbitur Camping Park – Valverde in the nearby town of Lagos is another solid option. At a slightly higher price point (though further from the beach), Turiscampo Camping & Bungalow Park – Yelloh Village is also recommended.
Portimão
The largest resort town close to the circuit (about 18km away) is Portimão, where you can find a good selection of hotels and apartments to rent. Portimão also has good local beaches, seafood restaurants and nightlife options. As previously advised, the promoter is likely to offer free shuttle buses from both Portimão and Lagos to the circuit on race weekend (like they already do for the MotoGP race).
Well-rated hotels on the beachfront include Bela Vista Hotel & Spa, Algarve Casino Hotel and Jupiter Algarve Hotel. Nearby, NH Marina Portimão Resort and Jupiter Marina Hotel are good 4-star options facing the Marina.
It’s also worth considering the beachside areas of Carvoeiro and Porches to the east of Portimão, which are home to many high-end resorts. Recommended places to stay include Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort and Hotel Mirachoro in Carvoeiro, and Pestana Viking and Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve in Porches.
Lagos
A few kilometers to the west, but offering a similar commute to Algarve International Circuit (and hopefully free shuttle buses), is the pretty coastal town of Lagos. Similar in size to Portimão, Lagos arguably offers a better nightlife and restaurant scene. The best accommodation can be found close to the old town and marina, or to the east near the 4km long Meia Beach (Meia Praia).
For budget-conscious fans, Lagos offers several decent hostels in the old town, notably Boutique Taghostel and Olive Hostel, both of which offer pretty communal roof terraces. Recommended mid-range properties include Suites Inn Lagos and Carvi Beach Hotel.
At the higher end, some of the best hotels within the old town or within easy walking distance include NH Lagos Algarve Resort, Aqualuz Lagos by The Editory, Marina Club Lagos Resort and Lagos Avenida Hotel. Well-rated resorts near Meia Beach include Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve and Palmares Beach House Hotel.
Albufeira
If you are unable to find anywhere to stay in the nearest coastal towns (or prices are too high), you may need to look further afield. While you may be able to get away without having a rental car in Portimão or Lagos, you’ll definitely need one if you stay in Albufeiro or Faro.
The pretty seaside city of Albufeira is the largest on the Algarve and boasts the best nightlife. Featuring a beautiful white-walled old town perched on cliffs overlooking the beach, Albufeira is about 50km or 40 minutes’ drive away from Algarve International Circuit.
Albufeira offers accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. In the Old Town, Cerro Mar Garden and Hotel Indigo are recommended. Close to the heart of the town’s nightlife on ‘The Strip’, the New Town area of Albufeira features some of the best hotels, including Areias Village Beach Suite Hotel, 3HB Golden Beach and Areias Village Beach Suite Hotel. Other recommended places to stay in Albufeira include the beachfront resorts Grande Real Santa Eulalia Resort & Hotel Spa and Alfagar Village.
Faro
Faro is the administrative capital of the Algarve Region, and is also home to Faro International Airport. There’s plenty of places to stay in the center of the city, as well as the neighboring city of Olhão and along the beaches to the west (notably around Vilamoura). The downside is that Faro is around 80km or at least an hour away from Algarve International Circuit.
Some of the best places to stay in the area include the Roots Hotel and 3HB Faro in the centre of Faro, Pure Formosa Concept Hotel and Quinta dos Poetas Nature Hotel & Apartments in Olhão, and at one of the many hotels and resorts along the beach to the west. The area near Faro is also home to several 5-star resorts, such as Hotel Quinta do Lago, Domes Lake Algarve, Autograph Collection and Hyatt Regency Vilamoura Algarve.
