What’s the difference between a pegasus and a unicorn?
I often find myself pondering this question about mythical creatures deep into the night. Not because I want to, but because I have a two-year-old daughter who will inevitably grow up and ask me all kinds of questions about magical horses. And if I don’t have a good answer? She’ll think I’m dumb.
I ain’t gonna let that happen.
So, what’s the difference? Wings versus horns. A pegasus has wings, whereas a unicorn has, as its name suggests, a single horn on its head.
Now that you’ve indulged my rambling, let’s get to the (horse) meat of this story: NIKE just dropped the Pegasus 1 Golf Shoe, and it’s unlike anything they’ve done before.
For four decades, NIKE’s Pegasus line of running footwear has been synonymous with speed. It’s often the first, and maybe only, running shoe the average person can name off the top of their head for a reason.
It’s the pinnacle of NIKE running innovation. And just as I’ve pondered the difference between pegasuses and unicorns, I’ve also wondered why NIKE never brought that same tech into a truly standout golf shoe.
Welp, they finally did the damn thing.
NIKE decided to lean hard into the Pegasus name, legacy, and technology for a new golf shoe. Introducing the Pegasus 1 Golf Shoe: the pinnacle of NIKE golf footwear.
Unicorns live among us
So, what makes it a unicorn? It’s the same reason Victor Wembanyama is often called a unicorn. You don’t find that combination of height, skill, and mobility very often. It’s rare. It’s unique.
That’s what a unicorn is, at least in the least mythical sense.
For too long, NIKE’s golf footwear line has felt like a bit of an afterthought. At least, that’s been my take.
But what they’ve created with the Pegasus 1 Golf Shoe is a unique combination of performance and cachet that makes it stand out as the flagship piece of NIKE Golf’s footwear lineup.
There are two things that will make the Pegasus 1 Golf Shoe a massive success: rare comfort and unique traction.
Rare Comfort
NIKE achieves rare comfort in the Pegasus 1 Golf Shoe with a combination of two foams. Cushlon and ReactX work in tandem to create a comfortable, responsive feel that just about every golfer will appreciate.
Pair that with the uniquely sculpted heel, similar to what they’ve done with the Pegasus 41 and 42 running shoes, and you’ve got something many golf shoes struggle to achieve: true running shoe-like fit and comfort.
Unique Traction
This is where things get interesting.
NIKE has taken lessons from both its spikeless and spiked golf shoes and combined them into the outsole of the Pegasus 1 Golf Shoe. The forefoot features NIKE’s proprietary spikes, which are unfortunately non-replaceable. The heel section uses a spikeless traction pattern similar to what we’ve seen in the Swoosh’s recent offerings.
Like the cushioning setup, the two traction systems work together to provide grip in virtually any condition. I’ve never been the biggest fan of NIKE’s spike designs, but this setup should be better than previous attempts. The fact that they managed to cram five spikes into the forefoot is a big win.
Pushing Forty
NIKE’s Pegasus line is 42 years old.
I dare you to find someone that age who won’t describe themselves as wise, seasoned, or savvy.
That’s exactly why the Pegasus 1 Golf Shoe works. NIKE has spent more than four decades learning what makes a great running shoe. Then they took all that knowledge, expertise, and veteran savvy and packed it into a golf shoe worthy of the best greens on the planet.
