Kentucky lands another big piece in Florida transfer guard

Mark Pope has been busy building the Kentucky Wildcats into the best version they can be for the 2025-26 season.

He’s now brought in five incoming players, each with a rather intriguing skill set that they’ll bring to the table. The latest is former Florida guard Denzel Aberdeen, who won the National Championship with the Gators and then decided to enter the transfer portal.

“These past three years at the University of Florida have been nothing short of amazing. I’m truly grateful to have worn the orange and blue and to represent Gator Nation with pride,” Aberdeen wrote on social media. “To my brothers — my teammates — I love y’all. We made history together, and those memories will stay with me forever. I’m honored to have been a part of something so special.”

Aberdeen was Florida’s backup point guard this past season, and he played a significant role in the Gators’ March Madness run. He was likely looking forward to a starting role in 2025, but then Florida added Princeton point guard Xaivian Lee from the portal.

Aberdeen is now poised to be a big part of Pope’s puzzle at Kentucky.

He averaged 7.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 19.7 minutes per game as Florida’s sixth man. During March Madness, he scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field in Florida’s Sweet 16 win against Maryland. In the National Championship game, he notched seven points and two rebounds as a backup.

It will be interesting to see if Aberdeen’s abilities transfer to a bigger role, which he will undoubtedly be looking for at Tennessee. However, he’s a veteran guard with championship experience. That will be extremely valuable for Kentucky in 2025.

From Orlando, Florida, Aberdeen was the No. 22 combo guard in the 2022 class.

Other notable transfer players Pope has brought in include former ASU freshman Jayden Quaintance, who was named to the Big 12 Conference All-Freshman and All-Defensive teams, and former Pitt star Jaland Lowe.

Kentucky’s haul from the transfer portal is currently ranked fourth in the nation.
