Zion Stanford officially plans to transfer from Villanova

Zion Stanford will officially leave Villanova this offseason.

The expected has now become reality as Stanford plans to enter the transfer portal, according to multiple reports stemming from Ken Jackson of Sky Limit Sports.

Stanford was not with the team over the final month of the season. He did not travel to Chicago for a March 4 game against DePaul, and the junior was not with the team during warmups ahead of the season finale against Xavier. Jeff Neiburg of The Philadelphia Inquirer quickly reported that Stanford was no longer with the team.

Stanford will have one year of eligibility remaining. This could become two if he attempts to get a medical redshirt, which requires a player to appear in less than 30% of their team’s games.

As a Temple transfer, Stanford seemed to be a big part of the offseason for the Wildcats. He suffered an ankle injury during the preseason. He dealt with knee issues as well, and ended up on the outside looking in at the rotation. Stanford last appeared in a game on Feb. 4 and last practiced with the team on Tuesday.

Stanford averaged 1.3 points in 5.1 minutes per game this season. The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 13.1 points and 4.5 rebounds during his sophomore year at Temple. He shot 34.9% from three-point range. He was one of the top players in the transfer portal when he committed to Villanova. He will now be looking for a new home for the end of his career.
