Oklahoma loses No. 1 RB recruit with Texas looming large

The Oklahoma Sooners had to have felt great when they landed a commitment from Micah Rhodes, a four-star 2028 running back out of Spring, Texas.

Rhodes is one of the best running backs in the 2028 class and one of the top recruits in the country overall. He committed to Oklahoma in January over the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies.

It was an extremely early commitment for a player who had just wrapped up his sophomore season in high school, though, so it’s not all that surprising that the decision has already been walked back.

On Wednesday, Rhodes reopened his recruitment. Notably, this comes after two visits to see Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns in recent weeks. It also comes a month after Oklahoma running backs coach DeMarco Murray left that job for the same position with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“To be honest with you, I don’t know, man,” Rhodes had told OU Insider in February, reacting to Murray’s departure. “It’s a lot of emotion going on right now. I’m happy for Coach, stepping his career up and going to do something that’ll help his career and help his family out and stuff like that. So I’m happy for him, but I obviously don’t know what to do… Me and my dad, we were talking about it. We’re talking to our agents, trying to get some closure on what’s going on right now and trying to get some ideas on what to do. But to be honest with you, we don’t know yet.”
