The Michigan Wolverines don’t have a quarterback problem on their hands just yet, but it’s worth noting that former star recruit Bryce Underwood has been a bit underwhelming.
He has elite upside. That much is for certain. Underwood is also an elite athlete.
He was the consensus No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 recruiting class, and the Wolverines are paying him handsomely to be their quarterback.
That’s why his freshman season was a bit concerning.
Underwood threw for 2,428 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions. His average passer rating of 126.65 was the 94th-worst amongst all qualified quarterbacks. His completion percentage of 60.3% was tied for 88th worst.
Underwood then went out in Michigan’s spring game last weekend and completed just three of nine passes for 22 total yards.
That’s why Stewart Mandel of “The Athletic” believes there should be some concern surrounding Underwood, even though that performance came in what is essentially a scrimmage.
“In my experience, the guys who play well in the fall don’t generally bomb in the spring game. And for that reason, I’m nervous about Bryce Underwood, too,” Mandell wrote.
