CFB is big business and Tennessee’s AD believes fans understand

Tennessee was at the center of the college football universe this spring when starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava left the program via the transfer portal.

There was a little bit of “he said, she said” going on between the two sides, but the ultimate result was that Iamaleave left the Volunteers and wound up at UCLA. Ironically enough, quarterback Joey Aguilar, who was set to play at UCLA after a successful stint at Appalachian State, entered the portal himself when Iamaleava landed back in Southern California.

Aguilar committed to Tennessee and is now expected to be the Volunteers’ starter heading into 2025.

It was a soap opera that nicely defines the NIL and transfer portal era (Iamaleava and Tennessee were apparently on opposite sides of NIL negotiations, which led to the quarterback “holding out”), but Tennessee athletic director Danny White recently revealed that he believes the Vols’ fanbase is plugged in enough to understand the situation.

“I think you continue to try to make the right decisions for the right reasons and that’s what we’ve tried to do for over four years now. And our coaches have tried to do,” White recently told the media (h/t On3). “In this instance, Josh [Heupel] I think had to make a hard decision but it usually ends up working out for the best and our fans really get it.”

Iamaleava is a former five-star recruit and he led the Volunteers to the College Football Playoff last season, but this has become a business.

Tennessee had to make a business decision just like Iamaleava made one for himself, and head coach Josh Heupel decided that he had to send a message that no one is bigger than the team.

That’s why the Vols didn’t appear all that willing to meet the quarterback’s demands. That’s not to mention that he was reportedly shopping himself around in 2024 with schools like Miami, Ole Miss and Oregon and Tennessee had heard about that.

College football has always been big business, but now it’s out in the open for everyone to see. Good on White for believing that his fanbase can see the forest through the trees.
