Coaches Who Left The NFL To Coach College (1:37)

It’s not unfair to say that Scott Frost’s tenure at Nebraska was mostly a disaster.

As exciting as it was to see the former Huskers QB return to Lincoln to revive his alma mater after impressive success at UCF, Nebraska’s football program simply failed to launch with Frost at the helm.

But those five seasons taught him something, the 50-year-old coach said: “Don’t take the wrong job.”

“I said I wouldn’t leave [UCF] unless it was someplace you could win a national championship,” Frost admitted, via The Athletic’s Chris Vannini. “I got tugged in a direction to try to help my alma mater and didn’t really want to do it. It wasn’t a good move. I’m lucky to get back to a place where I was a lot happier.”

Fans were pretty wowed by Frost’s comments on X.

“Damn he dissed his own Alma matter,” a user replied.

“Or don’t take a job and spend more time (allegedly) drinking than you do working,” another person posted.

“Correction: ‘don’t take the job you aren’t willing to put the effort in, and show up for,'” a fan remarked.

“Lmfaooo 😭😭”

“I just don’t know that I have the personality trait that allows me to go through life assuming everyone else is wrong,” 247’s Mike Schaefer commented. “What kind of environment would this be to work in? To play in? Multiple chances to own it. And Scott Frost simply never does.”

“Could’ve taken the high road but chose to say this about his alma mater instead,” another user pointed out. “Strange.”

Frost’s statements are a pretty brutal dig at Big Red and it’s hard to imagine they’ll play well among the Memorial Stadium faithful.

He’s since returned to UCF after a year away from college football where he’ll attempt to get the Knights back to the dominance they saw under himself and Josh Heupel as a member of the AAC in the late 2010s.
