Early Wednesday morning, a report seemed to bring the search for Arkansas’ next head football coach to an end.
Arkansas radio host Trey Schaap, who has covered the Razorbacks for nearly three decades, reported in a social media post that South Florida head coach Alex Golesh had accepted an offer to become the next head coach at Arkansas.
But the post, which was sent at 10:25 a.m. EST and has been viewed over 3.6 million times, has yet to be corroborated by any other major local or national sources, keeping Arkansas’ HC vacancy a mystery for the moment.
Nearly five hours after Schaap’s initial report, USF CEO of Athletics Rob Higgins issued a statement in which he said that Golesh had been presented with “outside opportunities” since the Bulls’ win over UAB on Nov. 22.
No deal done yet between Alex Golesh, Arkansas
While a reputable source like Schaap reporting a hiring certainly brings smoke with it, there’s no confirmation yet that Golesh will be on the sidelines in Fayetteville next season.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Golesh’s hiring is soon announced by the university, however, as his name was on a shortlist presented by ESPN on Saturday that also included newly hired Oklahoma State head coach Eric Morris, Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield.
With Morris off the board, Silverfield, Wommack and Golesh are all still officially in play for the job with no official made regarding Golesh’s future from either Arkansas or USF.
Arkansas will close its 2025 season against Missouri on Sunday with interim head coach Bobby Petrino at the helm, while Golesh will lead USF in its regular season finale against Rice.
