Former Florida State, Texas A&M HC may be considering a comeback

Jimbo Fisher has a ton of experience as a college football head coach. Some of that experience is great, too.  He won a BCS national championship with the Florida State Seminoles in 2013 and boasted a 14-0 season.

That’s pretty, pretty good.

He’s a championship-winning coach with a 128-48 overall record and an 8-2 record in bowl games. Just about any program in America would take that, and with the college football coaching carousel already in full swing this season, it’s no surprise to hear Fisher said that he’s thinking about a comeback.

“When you’re away from something, it makes you reflect,” Fisher said in a wide-ranging interview with Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports. “I’m back to watching film and have those feelings. I miss the players and those relationships. I miss practice. I miss the grind. I live to coach. I love to do what I did.”

Several big-time positions across the nation have opened up  — including head coaching vacancies with the Florida Gators and Penn State Nittany Lions — and Fischer could be a very intriguing option for interested athletic directors and school presidents.

The good, as mentioned, is good. Alongside the winning, he’s produced 72 NFL Draft picks, and he was also known as one heck of a recruiter. Per Dellenger, Fisher is credited with having landed 110 5-star recruits in his coaching career.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows with Fisher, though.

Jimbo Fisher comes with good and bad as a potential head coach candidate

Keep in mind, he was fired by the Texas A&M Aggies in November of 2023.

Fisher went 5-6 in his last season at FSU, which was in 2017. He jumped ship to join the Texas A&M Aggies from 2018 to 2023, but went 5-7 and then 6-4 in his final two seasons before being fired for not coaching the program up to its full potential.

Texas A&M was so ready to see Fisher go that the Aggies were willing to pay a buyout that was more than $76 million.

Just like with anything, there’s some bad mixed in with the good. Would a school like Arkansas or Oklahoma State take on Fisher, though, likely in a heartbeat? Absolutely.

One also has to wonder if Fisher could be biding his time for a return with the Seminoles. Current head coach Mike Norvell went 2-10 last season, and the Noles are suffering through a 3-4 season in 2025.

He may not be long for a job, and FSU fans could probably quickly forgive Fisher for leaving the first time around if he gets the program back to the standard that they had become used to.

Either way, Fisher wants to get back into it.

“It’s in his blood,” his wife, Courtney, said. “There’s no getting away from it.”
