Two former Illinois head coaches, Ron Zook and Lovie Smith, previously served as assistant coaches for the Vols. Zook was defensive backs coach at Tennessee from 1984-86 under head coach Johnny Majors. Smith was defensive backs coach from 1993-94 under head coach Phillip Fulmer.

He currently serves as special teams quality control coach at Maryland.

Zook began his coaching career as defensive backs coach at Orrville High School in Orrville, Ohio. He served as defensive backs coach at Murray State (1978-80) and defensive coordinator at Cincinnati (1981-82) before serving in the same position at Kansas (1983).

He returned to Florida as head coach (2002-04) before becoming head coach at Illinois in 2005. Following his tenure with the Illinois, he was special teams coach at Green Bay (2014-18).

Zook was secondary and special teams coordinator for the Salt Lake Stallions (Alliance of American Football) in 2019. He was defensive coordinator of the Seattle Sea Dragons of the UFL in 2023.
