Georgia’s route to the SEC championship

The No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs (10-1, 7-1 in SEC) are finished with their SEC slate, looking to make the SEC championship for the fifth straight year. Despite having a better SEC record than last year (the Bulldogs were 6-2), they still need help to reach the SEC championship.

Currently, the Texas A&M Aggies and the Alabama Crimson Tide control their own destiny in the SEC championship. Texas A&M is undefeated in the SEC (7-0), while Alabama, despite having a 6-1 record, has tiebreaker over Georgia due to winning in Week 5.

Ole Miss is also in the mix to win the SEC championship, giving Georgia another wrench in their plans to make the SEC championship. However, the route to the championship is still pretty easy.

How Georgia can make the SEC championship

Texas A&M loses to Texas

The no. 3 Texas A&M Aggies goes on the road against the No. 16 Texas Longhorns at 7:30 p.m. The Aggies remain undefeated so far, and with a loss, they’ll still remain in the College Football Playoff and could stay in the SEC championship.

However, the Aggies are only favored by 2.5 points to win vs. the Longhorns. Texas A&M hasn’t won against Texas since 2010, although the Lone Star Showdown didn’t feature a game between 2012-2023. If the Aggies lose, they’d be in the moshpit of one-loss teams with Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss.

Since Texas A&M hasn’t played any of those teams, the Aggies would have to stack up their SEC opponent winning percentage with them. That would be just a measly .2813 win percentage, since the Aggies have played against the bottom 7 teams in the SEC. Georgia would slip above them, playing Alabama in the SEC championship.

Alabama loses to Auburn

The No. 10 Alabama stands at 6-1 in the SEC, despite their loss to the No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners. Their last SEC matchup is in the Iron Bowl against unranked Auburn (5-6, 1-6 in SEC).

Despite the Tigers playing with an interim head coach and backup quarterback, the game is still up for grabs. Alabama and Auburn usually play each other close at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Games like the Kick Six in 2013 and the 4th and 31 in 2023 are fresh in every Alabama fan’s mind.

If the Crimson Tide lose and Texas A&M win, the Bulldogs would play the Aggies in the championship. If both teams lose, Georgia would play Ole Miss. Either way, Georgia’s SEC championship hopes are still alive, and it’d be the fifth year in a row Georgia makes the SEC championship, tying the Florida Gators (1992-96) for most SEC championship appearances in a row.
