The Arizona State Sun Devils just finished one of the greatest seasons in program history, winning the Big 12 and advancing to the College Football Playoff.
The Sun Devils were led by running back Cam Skattebo, who ended the season with over 1,700 rushing yards – second only to Heisman finalist Ashton Jeanty.
Skattebo went viral during Arizona State’s playoff game against Texas, as many fans watched his hard-nosed style of play for the first time.
The running back became a college football folk hero, but he’s potentially landed in some legal trouble with a former teammate.
Skattebo is being sued by former walk-on offensive lineman Mattheos Katergaris, according to The Phoenix New Times’ Zach Buchanan. Katergaris alleges that in 2013, Skattebo’s negligence led to a serious injury.
Katergaris says that he and another player were sitting on a golf cart en route to the locker room. The players were also told that the cart had a weight limit of 600 pounds.
Skattebo allegedly “then jumped on the back of the golf cart” and “jumped up and down on the rear bench as the golf cart traveled a considerable distance. Subsequently, the rear bench of the golf cart structurally failed.”
Katergaris says that the incident caused “serious bodily injury, which resulted in months of medical care.”
The former lineman is seeking damages of at least $300,000 from both Skattebo and the Arizona Board of Regents.
Arizona State has already paid for Katergaris’ treatment, but it has admitted that Skattebo “boarded the back of the golf cart while two other players were sitting on the rear section.”

The former Arizona State running back is in Indianapolis this weekend for the annual NFL Scouting Combine. After his breakout season with the Sun Devils in 2024, Skattebo is expected to be considered by teams around the league in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Arizona State finished with an 11-3 record in 2024, and they defeated Iowa State to win the Big 12 championship. It was their first conference title since 2007, when they finished as co-champions of the Pac-10 with USC.
We’ll see what comes of the lawsuit against Skattebo, and what happens after his performance at the NFL Combine.
