NFL scouting director ‘less fired up’ about Cade Klubnik before next year’s draft

Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik has become one of the more puzzling storylines in college football this fall, and NFL evaluators are taking notice.

Once projected as a potential breakout player in 2024, Klubnik has stumbled badly through the first month of the season. He currently ranks just 16th in the ACC in passer rating, while Clemson sits at a disappointing 1-3. Against Power 4 opponents, Klubnik has nearly as many interceptions (three) as touchdowns (four), a troubling ratio for a quarterback with his level of experience.

“He looks really uncomfortable out there,” a rival defensive coordinator told The Athletic. “He’s late so often. He looks like a first-time starter, not a guy with as much experience as he has.”

An NFL scouting director also noting that Klubnik has not progressed the way many expected. “If anybody’s pressing, he is,” the scouting director said. “Something’s off with him, but I was less fired up about him than I think a lot of other guys were. I did see the twitch, the mobility, some arm talent, but he needed to clean up his accuracy and decision-making. He just hasn’t been able to play calm and poised. (Clemson), to me, they’re talented, but I don’t know what’s going on there. They’re not playing together.”

Clemson’s unraveling has been interesting to watch. Prior to the Syracuse loss, the Tigers hadn’t lost a home game to an unranked opponent by more than 12 points since 2001. The defense boasts three projected first-round NFL Draft picks, yet still gave up 400 yards. Offensively, the Tigers have been among the least productive in the nation, averaging just 19.8 points per game (116th in the FBS).

But inside the locker room, there’s a belief the season isn’t lost. Klubnik himself admitted during Wednesday’s press conference that he “has to be better,” while maintaining that Clemson is “just a few plays away” from turning things around.

The Tigers opened the year ranked No. 4 nationally but losses to LSU and Georgia Tech snowballed into a season-defining skid. For Klubnik, the challenge now is less about talent and more about proving he can lead a Clemson offense desperate for answers.
