Meet The Girlfriend Of Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard (1:24)

It’s always tragic for a university whenever any former player or student passes, but that’s especially the case when it happens to someone so young.

Over the weekend Notre Dame mourned the loss of former standout defensive lineman Oliver Gibson, who played for the Irish from 1990-1994 before enjoying a nine-year NFL career with the Steelers and Bengals.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Oliver Gibson,” the school posted to social media on Monday. “We send our condolences to his family and friends.”

Gibson was just 53 years old when he died unexpectedly. But the Romeoville, Illinois native accomplished a lot in the abridged amount of time he had on Earth.

The 304-pound D-tackle was named a Parade Magazine All-American and USA Today’s High School Defensive Player of the Year in 1989 before suiting up for one of the most storied programs in all of college football.

After four seasons in South Bend, Gibson went on to be the 120th overall selection in the 1995 NFL Draft where he was an underrated piece of the “Blitzburgh” Steelers defense that fell to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX.

Following his playing days, Gibson eventually made his way back to Romeoville where he took a head coaching job at the school that helped lift him to a professional football career.

The ex-Notre Dame DT even received a shoutout from former teammate Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, whom he played alongside in Cincinnati from 2001-2003: “R.I.P Oliver Gibson ‘OG’ 🕊️” Johnson shared to X.

By all accounts Gibson was a beloved member of the locker room and a heck of a football player. May he rest peacefully.
