Athletes Who Unfortunately Passed Away In 2024 (1:45)

The football community is mourning the loss of Bergenfield High School coach Rob Violante this week.

On May 14, Violante was involved in a two-car crash on the Taconic State Parkway in New York. A southbound Sprinter van crossed the median and crashed into a northbound Honda sedan. That crash killed four people and left a fifth person in critical condition.

Violante’s death was confirmed by the New Jersey Football Coaches Association.

“He was more than a coach, he was a mentor, father figure, and a source of strength for our students and community,” Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio said. “His impact as Head Football Coach and Dean of Students will never be forgotten.”

Violante became the head coach at Bergenfield in 2011. He has taken the team to the playoffs five times, winning 61 games over the past 15 years. His father, Frank, is currently the athletic director at Glen Rock High School.

Over the past 24 hours, countless people have extended their thoughts and prayers to the Violante family.

“Absolutely devastated to learn about the passing of Rob Violante this morning,” one person wrote on X. “Rob was a star QB and basketball player at Somers when I was in HS. Always heard the name and knew he was the son of legendary football coach Skip Violante at Dobbs Ferry. And he, and his brothers Chris and Brian, later became friends of mine.”

“Devastated for our community, for my assistant coach and his family,” another person said. “A tragedy. Lost an incredible human, an impactful man, and someone who will never be forgotten. Life is unfair sometimes. Hug the people you love. Rest easy Coach Rob Violante.”

“Very sad news. Our thoughts & prayers are with you. The Suffern Basketball program has the whole Violante family in our hearts at this time,” a third person commented.

Violante’s legacy will never be forgotten.

Our thoughts are with Violante’s loved ones.
