Prayers are pouring in after a college athletics administrator died suddenly at 34.

The University of Alabama in Huntsville announced that Associate AD Sam Baldwin has died. He reportedly died unexpectedly last weekend. Baldwin had been with the school’s athletic program since 2014-15.

“This is devastating for all of us who loved Sam,” the school’s AD, Cade Smith, said. “Sam was a great employee who loved the Chargers. Sam made us better. Most importantly, he was good friend. He will be missed and he has left a void that will be hard to fill. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Olivia Whitmire, the News 19 Sports Director who worked closely with Baldwin, is devastated.

“Like Cade said, this is truly devastating news,” Whitmire said. “Sam’s official title was Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Communications, but we just called him the SID for sports information director. The SIDs of the world do whatever they can to make our jobs easier as sports reporters, and Sam did a phenomenal job. No ask was too much for him, and he always wanted the best coverage for all of UAH’s teams. More importantly than anything he did professionally, Sam was a great person and friend, and I know I can speak for many when I say we’re going to miss him so much.”

Prayers are pouring in for his friends and family members.

His family released a lengthy obituary statement.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear son, Samuel James Baldwin who died on June 22, 2025, at the age of 34. Sam was born on April 21, 1991, in Euclid, Ohio,” the obituary read.

“He will be remembered for his undying compassion for family and friends, his creativity, sense of humor, loyalty in all aspects of his life and commitment to social responsibility.

“He graduated from the University of Tampa and went on to attain his master’s degree in sports management and education at the University of Akron in Ohio. He also had a distinguished career as Associate Athletic Director, communication at the University of Alabama Huntsville.

“Sam enjoyed baseball, cycling, reading, and playing guitar.”

A funeral is set for July 26.
