Rutgers Listed As 5.5 Point Underdogs Against Minnesota

The betting odds for the next week of college football have been released, and Rutgers is listed as a 5.5 point underdog against Minnesota, according to Fanduel. The total over-under for the game is listed at 51.5 points, which seems a little low for how much the Scarlet Knights have been scoring on offense and how much they have been letting in on defense this season.

After Rutgers’ loss to Iowa last Friday, this game looks more and more like a must-win game for Rutgers. Since the back half of the schedule is very difficult, the Knights have to win enough games early to qualify for bowl eligibility. Washington looks like they took a step up this year, while Minnesota looks like the most winnable game for the next few weeks.

Despite the loss, Rutgers’ offense looked pretty capable, putting up 28 points against a stout Iowa defense. Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis had another 300-yard game and scored two touchdowns with his legs while wide reciever Ian Strong had over 150 receiving yards on the day. The rushing attack looked good as well, despite injuries to offensive tackle Tyler Needham and Runningback CJ Campbell.

Rutgers still has a lot to address, particularly on defense. The Knights’ run defense has been extremely suspect for the first few weeks of the season. They will be going up against Minnesota’s three headed monster at running back, as Darius Taylor (who is expect to return this game), Grant Washington, and Fame Ijeboi all have over 120 yards rushing through the first three games of their season. Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey hasn’t been stellar to start the season, and hasn’t had much success using his legs either, so it will be interesting to see how that matches up against a Rutgers defense and option contain that has also left a lot to be desired this season.

Minnesota also has the advantage of coming off a bye week, so they could have a special something in the game plan for Rutgers.

Rutgers-Minnesota will kick off in Minneapolis on Saturday, September 27th, at noon.
