Texas Tech’s Sorsby might lose eligibility over gambling scandal

Projected first-round pick Brendan Sorsby is reportedly checking into a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.

According to a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Texas Tech
football program released a statement detailing the situation:

“The University is committed to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being,” read the statement.

The former Cincinnati star reportedly placed thousands of wagers on multiple sports through a gambling app. Per NCAA guidelines, that jeopardizes his eligibility with Texas Tech.

Brendan Sorsby might lose his eligibility

Per Thamel, Sorsby bet on Indiana football while he was with the program in 2022. The bets were on the Hoosiers to win, and he didn’t play in any of those games.

As of now, there are no reports of whether law enforcement is keeping tabs on Sorsby. He’s under no suspicion of throwing games or being influenced by outside sources to impact the outcome of any game. The program didn’t want to commit to any potential timelines for his return.

“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in a statement. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”

Sorsby was the No. 1 player in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings, and he’s firmly expected to be one of the first 32 players taken in the 2027 NFL Draft.

That, of course, will depend on what the NCAA decides to do, given that college athletes are strictly prohibited from betting on college sports. While he might be able to appeal, he’s likely going to be deemed ineligible for competition.

Sorsby totaled 36 touchdowns (27 passing) and five picks last season for the Bearcats, and he was already underwater after being sued for $1 million for breach of contract when he left for the Red Raiders.
