Coaches Who Left The NFL To Coach College (1:37)

Urban Meyer has coached countless great players during his career, and yet, there’s one in particular that stands out from the pack.

Meyer had plenty of success at Bowling Green and Utah, but it wasn’t until he got to Florida that he was coaching rosters loaded with NFL talent. Of course, he also recruited elite players to Ohio State during his stint from 2012-2018.

Ohio State’s national championship team in 2014 had NFL stars such as Joey Bosa, Taylor Decker, Ezekiel Elliott and Michael Thomas on the roster. That being said, the best player Meyer has ever coached actually belongs to Florida’s program.

During this week’s episode of “The Triple Option” podcast, Meyer spoke to FOX broadcasters Mark Ingram and Rob Stone about former Florida star Percy Harvin.

Meyer described Harvin as “arguably the greatest player to put on a helmet.” He valued the two-time national champion’s versatility and football IQ.

“I’ve said this and not many people disagree who watched him, or played against him, or played with him,” Meyer said. “I think he’s arguably the greatest player to put on a helmet. He’s the most violent runner I’ve ever had, and Mark, he never got hit. We used to say he’d have eyes on the side and the back of his head. He was extremely smart.”

Harvin was an absolute weapon at Florida from 2006-2008. He hauled in 133 passes for 1,929 yards and 13 touchdowns during his career with the Gators. Additionally, he had 1,852 yards and 19 scores on the ground.

The Minnesota Vikings selected Harvin with the 22nd pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. He went on to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Even though Harvin didn’t have a Hall of Fame career in the pros, he still managed to win a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks.
