Virginia Tech football: 4-star TE Pierce Petersohn flips from Penn State to Hokies

Could the Virginia Tech Hokies football team have had a better Thanksgiving Day? Early on Thursday, offensive tackle Roseby Lubintus committed to the Hokies. A few hours later, offensive tackle Marlen Bright flipped his commitment from Penn State to Virginia Tech.

New head coach James Franklin wasn’t done.

Later on Thursday evening, four-star tight end Pierce Petersohn also flipped his commitment from Penn State to Virginia Tech.

Petersohn committed to the Nittany Lions in June and remained committed when they fired Franklin last month. But it quickly became clear the Hokies had a chance when Petersohn visited Blacksburg last weekend on an official visit.

Who is Petersohn?

He’s a 6-f00t-5, 195-pound athlete who plays quarterback for Triton High School in Dodge Center, Minnesota. He projects to tight end in college. An excellent athlete, Petersohn is also a standout basketball player, which could help his transition to tight end.

Petersohn joins a class with one tight end already committed: Isaiah Pina. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Pina is new to football, having also been a basketball standout. He will sign with the Hokies next week. Virginia Tech will also return Benji Gosnell, Ja’Ricious Hairston and Harrison Saint Germain next season. Of course, any of those players could enter the transfer portal, but with two freshmen who need development, it would make sense for the three veterans to return. Gosnell has been grossly underused this season.

The Hokies will have another big recruiting weekend this weekend before things go quiet ahead of the early signing period.

Welcome home, Pierce.
