Why Sanders looking to Swinney for inspiration to help Colorado

The Colorado Buffaloes are 1-2 so far in the 2025 college football season, with their only win coming against a Conference USA opponent in Delaware. The Buffs lost in Week 1 to Georgia Tech, 27-20, and then again in Week 3 to Houston, 36-20.

It’s certainly not the start that head coach Deion Sanders wanted, but Coach Prime still believes that his team can turn this thing around and finish out strong. He has evidence that it’s possible, too, because one of his coaching heroes, Dabo Swinney, has orchestrated a similar turnaround before at Clemson.

Deion Sanders inspired by Dabo Swinney’s coaching

“Dabo Swinney is one of my favorites. I love him to life. I love the man he is, the coach he is — just a great guy. Just a guy that I could look up to in this coaching realm,” Sanders said in a recent news conference (h/t On3). “Just looking back on some of the things that they’ve accomplished, and they’ve been sitting here before, 1-2 and they turned it all around. I think they ended up 10-2 that season.”

Ironically, Clemson is also 1-2 on the season with tough losses to Georgia Tech, but nobody is counting the Tigers out just yet. As long as Swinney is at the helm, they’ve got a shot to make some hay in the ACC.

That’s the type of impact Sanders wants to have at Colorado, and that’s clearly the message he’s preaching to his team after this tough start. He doesn’t want to give up because there’s still a ton of football left to play.

Deion Sanders wants Colorado Buffaloes to keep the faith

“And, why not us? Why can’t we turn it around? Why can’t we correct the wrongs with the rights and display consistency and do those things?” Sanders said. “Because, we have the talent in house. We just got to put it to usage and do what we are capable of doing.”

As with any good turnaround, the Buffaloes are going to have to take it one game at a time. They still have some very tough opponents on their schedule (No. 12 Iowa State, No. 16 Utah, and Arizona State), but the Buffs must first focus on hosting 2-1 Wyoming of the Mountain West this weekend. For what it’s worth, they are the heavy favorites against the Cowboys. According to ESPN BET, Colorado is a 13.5-point favorite.
