The news dropped on Monday that Texas Tech star quarterback Brendan Sorsby had been granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA and will be eligible to play for the Red Raiders in 2026. Sorsby had been ruled ineligible by the NCAA earlier this year after he acknowledged gambling on sports, including on his own team while at Indiana.

The reaction across the sports media landscape was one of shock and disgust at the general state of college athletics. Here is some of the most viral and prominent reaction as of Monday morning.

There really aren’t any rules. You just go to court. If it fails, go to court again until a judge says you’re all set.

Want a 7th year?

Sure

Broke rules?

Ahhhh, it’s fine.

There AREN’T any rules.

Brendan Sorsby admitted to wagering at least $90,000 across more than 9,000 bets during his college career, including bets involving Indiana football while he was a member of the Hoosiers in 2022.

For the current outlook to be that he’ll play in 2026 after serving just a… https://t.co/BnM5ifoaLB

• 9000 different bets• $90,000 wagered• Betting on games he suited up for• Willfully ignoring classes and meetings from 3 different institutions about the one cardinal sin in sports

But hey, find a local judge and convince him the kid will be really sad if he doesn’t get…

The existential questions of the offseason in college football: Do we want rules? Do we want to be governed?

In Lubbock, the answer is no. Brendan Sorsby is, for now, eligible to play in 2026 at Texas Tech.

Complete travesty.

— Pat Forde (@ByPatForde) June 8, 2026

Brendan Sorsby getting a preliminary injunction to avoid consequences for gambling on his own team could possibly be the straw that breaks the back and ignites some tangible movement on how to govern the sport moving forward. Maybe I’m overreacting, and it’s probably even wishful…

Noah Shannon didn’t bet on his own team’s games and was villainized while being suspended his entire final season of eligibility. Shannon likely would have gotten a ton more experience, knowledge and film for a potential NFL career. This Sorsby situation sucks for the sport.

In many ways, the NFL at large is able to dodge a bullet thanks to this Sorsby injunction. The gambling issue has time to play out, the league avoids a Pryor-like punishment carryover and teams get the ’26 season as a valuable data point

Anti-Trust Impact?

The other angle being discussed here is whether or not congress granting anti-trust exemptions to the NCAA could solve this. According to two legal experts, the answer is “no”.

Another example where a model with employment/collective bargaining would be better than the current system.

A federal law with an antitrust exemption wouldn’t prevent this type of lawsuit.

Sorsby brought contract claims against the NCAA, not antitrust claims. https://t.co/LaJfIlCh5M

Big loss for the NCAA in the Sorsby case. The NCAA will continue to lose cases when it acts arbitrarily and capriciously. This isn’t an antitrust case. It’s based on breach of contract, breach of duty of good faith and fair dealing, and breach of fiduciary duty. An antitrust… https://t.co/ul8MZAithx pic.twitter.com/Ty39QXy1tw

The news dropped on a Monday morning by district judge Ken Curry in Lubbock County, Texas, restores Sorsby’s eligibility, saying that the NCAA cannot prevent him from “practicing, playing or otherwise participating on Texas Tech’s football team for the 2026 season.”

The ruling also said that Sorsby, “demonstrated that he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if this Court does not issue this temporary injunction because he will be unable to participate as a member of Texas Tech University’s 2026 Football season.”

According to multiple reports, Sorsby will serve a two-game suspension. That will allow him to return for Tech’s Week 3 Big 12 opener against Houston on Friday, September 18th.
