As Texas Tech football quarterback Brendan Sorsby was involved in a gambling scandal, his status for the 2026 season has been up in the air. While the NCAA has denied the Texas Tech football quarterback’s eligibility for the 2026 season, with the next steps going to court, Sorsby would take to social media to talk about his rehab treatment.
Sorsby has completed his 35-day rehab program, where he was a patient at Algamus, which is a gambling rehab facility in Goodyear, Arizona. In a statement, Sorsby would announce completing the rehab for “gambling addiction and anxiety disorder” and that he feels free “for the first time in many years.”
“While I accept responsibility for my behavior and know that I have a lot of work ahead of me, for the first time in many years, I feel more free, and no longer fully at the mercy of my addiction. I am endlessly grateful to all who have supported me over the last several weeks, especially my family, friends, the experts and staff at Algamus Recovery Services, and the entire Texas Tech community,” Sorsby said, via Ross Dellenger.
Texas Tech’s Brendan Sorsby on his “new beginning.”
While Sorsby’s status for the 2026 season with the Texas Tech football program is still up in the air, there is no denying that the 22-year-old’s main focus was on helping his addiction. Sorsby would continue on his statement that he feels “this is the start of a new beginning.”
“I know recovery from addiction is a long road, and I hope that my experience has, in even some small way, reduced the stigma associated with speaking up about addiction and getting help. I am committed to my ongoing treatment and being a resource to many other student-athletes and other kids out there dealing with gambling addiction and other mental health issues,” Sorsby said.
Sorsby would conclude by saying he is “looking forward to returning to campus” at Texas Tech and hopes that he is “fortunate enough” to continue his collegiate career. It remains to be seen what happens to Sorsby and his status with the Red Raiders.
