Nike GT Cut 4 Wemby Statue Of Liberty

At this point, another Player Exclusive for the Victor Wembanyama is hardly news. Nike Basketball has been pumping out one-offs and made-for-retail editions for the Frenchman from the get-go to gear up for what may be a Wemby signature shoe with the Swoosh. What is surprising is the inspiration and the fact that Nike chose to green-light it at this time.

Wemby’s latest Nike GT Cut 4 PE borrows from the Statue of Liberty, dressing the silhouette in the signature green and gold while leaning into the story that France gifted the monument to the United State, just as — in Nike’s eyes — Wembanyama is France’s gift to basketball. Here’s the official product description on Nike Japan’s site:

France’s greatest gifts to the United States? Lady Liberty—and Wemby. This special G.T Cut 4 is inspired by the all-time towering imports, taking its inspiration from the landmark’s unmistakable hues and Wemby’s worldwide wonder. Merci, Paris! From full-length springy Nike Air to a feathery ZoomX midsole to the cutting-edge upper, this mold-breaker combines our best basketball technologies for the alpha space makers who refuse to settle for anything but winning. With its extra-durable rubber outsole, this version gives you traction for outdoor courts.

This release arrives on the heels of an NBA Finals that ended with the New York Knicks hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy after defeating the San Antonio Spurs. Given how emotionally charged the series became and the strong reactions from many sports fans to Wembanyama’s on-court antics, lack of sportsmanship, and postgame “See you…never” exit, introducing a New York landmark into his latest PE feels like a creative decision that shouldn’t have made it beyond the cutting room floor. Knicks fans will obviously not mess with these on any capacity, while Spurs fans likely do not want to rock anything associated with New York let alone reminded of the 2026 Finals as a whole.

On paper, it’s a clever narrative, but the timing is just completely awkward and shows that ideas that may work on the short run don’t necessarily have the steam to push it through months down the line. The messaging on the left heel reads an brief and somewhat arrogant “You’re Welcome” with its French translation on the right. Knicks fans have plenty to thank Wemby for.

Another wrinkle is that the Statue of Liberty has already become closely associated with Knicks star Jalen Brunson, whose Kobe 6 Protro release last winter quickly became one of the most sought-after Kobe releases in recent memory.

If Nike’s goal was to create a colorway Wemby fans could rally behind, this wasn’t it. However, these official images reflect the GT Cut 4 EP, which means it is designated for the Asia-Pacific region. Whether or not it’ll hit the U.S. market remains to be seen.
