Roy Jones Jr. is the latest ex-fighter to share his thoughts on the potential showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
Canelo and ‘Bud’ are reportedly close to being matched up in one of the biggest fights in boxing, despite there being 14lbs separating the pound-for-pound stars.
The Mexican icon Canelo is the reigning WBC, WBA and WBO champion at super middleweight, having been the undisputed champion up until last year when he was stripped of his IBF crown when he opted to face Edgar Berlanga Jr rather than mandatory challenger, William Scull.
Crawford became a four-weight world champion last August when he dethroned WBA light middleweight champion Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles. The 37-year-old has made it clear that he is only targeting the biggest fights available to him as he enters the final chapter of a glittering career.
Speaking to Mill City Boxing, four-weight world champion Jones admits he is ‘leaning towards’ the Mexican superstar, but did not rule out the chances of ‘Bud’ picking up the win.
“I like Terence, but I’m going to lean towards ‘Canelo’ with his size early but if he lets Terence get into the fight Terence going to be a problem and if Terence can deal with the size, Terence will beat him.”
It was revealed earlier this week that the fight between Canelo and Crawford is likely to take place in September, with Las Vegas looking like the chosen location for the mega fight.
An official announcement is set to be made in due course, as boxing fans eagerly await confirmation of what could be one of the biggest fights in the sport’s history.
