Almost 12-months on from their controversial first meeting, Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia have reportedly agreed to a rematch.
It comes after both fighters held productive discussions with Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh, who has been keen on getting a second clash between the pair over the line.
As revealed by the Ring Magazine, the provisional date for the rematch has been set for October, but will only take place if Haney and Garcia come through their respective ‘warm up’ fights, which will reportedly take place on the same card in American this May.
‘King Ry’ prevailed in their first meeting last April, dropping the 26-year-old former WBC super lightweight champion several times before picking up a points victory at the Barclays Center in New York. The celebrations were short lived for Garcia though, after it was revealed shortly after that he had tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine in a test that was taken on fight night.
The 26-year-old from California was issued with a 1-year suspension and a fine of over $1 million. ‘King Ry’ is free to resume his boxing career in April, just 1 month before he is expected to return to the ring against an opponent that is yet to be confirmed.
Haney was made WBC super lightweight ‘Champion In Recess’ at his own request shortly after it was revealed that Garcia had failed the drugs test, claiming the events of what happened after his last outing forced him to take a break from the sport.
‘The Dream’ has started preparing for his return to boxing with a recent open workout in London, as he looks forward to seeking revenge over ‘King Ry’ later on this year.
