How Did Odyssey Remove The Torque And The Color From Their S2S TRI-HOT Black Putters?

Although it is about six months early, Odyssey just unveiled a perfect Black Friday putter line release. This nifty new noir line features assistive Odyssey technologies and fan-favorite head shapes all cloaked in black. 

It’s not the day after Thanksgiving but once you see the new Square 2 Square TRI-HOT Black putters, don’t be surprised if you experience feelings of thankfulness.

It’s the perfect time for you to explore how Odyssey does zero-torque. The S2S TRI-HOT Black line packs all of the functional technologies that made Odyssey putters the zero-torque putters to beat in 2026.

“Putters to beat” is not hyperbole either. Just this week, the Odyssey S2S Ai-DUAL #7 was crowned the 2026 Most Wanted Zero-Torque putter.

What a week! Scoreboard and a new outfit. If the contrasting red and black colors of the original S2S TRI-HOT putters were too bold for you, perhaps basic black will be more to your liking.

A long list of putter design innovations

I’m going to briefly list the significant putter technologies that Odyssey packed into their Square 2 Square TRI-HOT putters. Again, I’m trying to be brief but Odyssey packed the tech into these putters.

Zero-torque with the shaft toward the face

The primary mission of the Square 2 Square TRI-HOT line was to move the shaft from the center of the putter to a more traditional forward location. The challenge was to do so and maintain the zero-torque nature of the putter.

Odyssey used multi-material construction, including lots of tungsten, to move the center of gravity of the putter to the topline. Doing so allowed them to then attach the shaft at this new forward center of gravity location.

The shaft still attaches to the CG but the CG is now at the front.

Odyssey bends the shaft and maintains the zero-torque profile

Next, Odyssey decided to mess with the shaft. Moving the CG and shaft forward made a more traditional-looking center-shafted putter but some folks are not interested in center-shafted putters.

Knowing this, Odyssey released the S2S TRI-HOT SB putters. These putters featured a single-bend shaft that attached to the heel of the putter. The bend in the shaft aimed the shaft angle right at the now forward CG. This eliminated torque but, more importantly, opened up the center of the putter for a more traditional look.

Odyssey made zero-torque look so “normal” that they had to add a “Still Zero Torque” sticker to the grip.

Other fancy techie stuff

The shaft location is not the only tech story with the S2S TRI-HOT and TRI-HOT SB putters. The heavier 120SL shaft and Pistol Plus grips are new as is the Ai-DUAL insert.

In any other release, the Ai-DUAL insert with its Forward Roll Design grooves would be the highlight of the technological chronicle. The insert does normalize distance while promoting better roll than the original Ai-ONE insert, after all.

The new black color will no doubt overshadow these significant putting technologies for this release. Good thing you don’t need to know the tech is there for it to work.

New S2S TRI-HOT Black models

In total, there are six new S2S TRI-HOT Black models. I have in-hand photos of five. For the #7 Cruiser, just pretend the Black #7 SB is heavier and longer.

Embracing the S2S TRI-HOT Black darkness

There is quite a bit to unpack with these torque-free black beauties. First of all, it’s great that there is a mix of center-shafted and single-bend shaft models.

Odyssey understands that zero-torque players from both camps will be interested in the new black color. Unfortunately, Camp Lefty is left out of the darkness this time around.

S2S TRI-HOT Black’s classy contrasts

I really appreciate the contrasting gray-blue color on the S2S TRI-HOT Black Jailbird models. I was expecting classic black and white stripes. The contrast is still there with the black and gray-blue but it is more subtle.

The black finish is dynamic. You can see in the photos that the depth of the finish shifts with the light. In overcast conditions, it is very black. Under full sun, the finish changes to a deep charcoal.

This black is not basic.

In all light conditions, the white sight lines pop against the darker base color.

What are your thoughts on the new finish? Is it pushing you off the fence and into the shop? Do you prefer the original red-and-black aesthetic or are you kicking yourself for not getting the S2S TRI-HOT Black instead?

When these release on June 12, you could always buy a second one (assuming you had the $599.99 to do so).

I prefer the all-black look to the red-and-black of the originals, especially the S2S TRI-HOT Black Rossie SB. That mallet looks amazing in its little black dress.
