Kalen DeBoer’s extension will impact Alabama’s football program

Kalen DeBoer has been in a tough position as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

On one hand, he was hired because he appeared to be an up-and-coming star college coach thanks to his time with the Washington Huskies. DeBoer went 25-3 in two seasons at Washington while taking the Huskies to the national championship game.

The other side of the coin for DeBoer at Alabama was that he was the guy replacing “the guy.” That guy is Nick Saban, of course.

DeBoer came to Tuscaloosa immediately under pressure to not just win, but win big.

That’s why his 20-8 record in two seasons is nice, but it’s not good enough. DeBoer is 1-2 in bowl games, and his Crimson Tide was knocked out of the College Football Playoff embarrassingly, 38-3, by the Indiana Hoosiers.

That’s not going to get it done in Tuscaloosa, and until Wednesday, there could have been a case made that DeBoer was entering 2026 on a bit of a hot seat. He’s certainly under pressure, no matter what.

With that said, the Crimson Tide stepped up to the plate and gave DeBoer a contract extension. They extended his contract by two years, through 2033, and they’re going to pay him $12.5 million per season.

This is a sign of faith in DeBoer, not just for 2026 but for the long term.

It’s also a great move for the Alabama football program.

Kalen DeBoer can breathe a sigh of relief at Alabama

Not only should this help him get even more comfortable in his own skin as Saban’s successor, but it’s proof that Alabama isn’t expecting DeBoer to win six national titles for his time with the program to be considered a success.

Saban’s success is the standard, for sure, but it’s a standard that likely can’t be reached in the NIL era. Things have changed in college football, drastically, and the transfer portal and advent of NIL deals have made it so programs like Indiana can compete with Alabama at the top of the college football totem poll.

Previously, that would have seemed impossible. Now, it’s simply the reality that DeBoer is living in.

The other thing this extension is going to do for Alabama is take a ton of uncertainty away on the recruiting trail and in the transfer portal.

Alabama recruiting will be impacted by Kalen DeBoer’s extension

DeBoer was never officially on the hot seat, but if he was being judged by the Saban standard of championships being the only thing that matters, he’d be 0-2 in that regard.

It would have been easy for another SEC head coach in the running for a top recruit alongside Alabama to point to a potential lack of job security for DeBoer as a reason for a five-star to not commit to the Tide.

That excuse is lazy, but things like that happen on the recruiting trail.

It’s an excuse that’s now gone, though, and the Tide will be better off for it as they continue to fight for elite recruits.

To that point, the Tide have only four commitments for 2027 so far in a class that’s ranked No. 48 nationally. That’s a ranking that has to change for DeBoer, but now it can because he can speak with certainty about his long-term future with the program.

It’s a win-win down in Tuscaloosa.
